Round 3
Scenes at Bunton as North stun flag fancies!
North Albury secured 2 from 2 with their first win over the hapless Maggies in 8 years! With scores locked at the final change, the Hoppers secured a memorable win with a 3 goal to 1 final term to run away by 10 points. '22 Farrer League leading goalkicker Nathan Dennis bobbed up with 5 in a BOG display for the Hoppers, while Tim Broomhead inspired his young chargers with 33 touches, 15 contested, 7 tackles & a goal.
The Maggies clearly won first use from the centre & inside 50 count, but struggled to maintain possession with basic skill errors proving costly, turning the ball over 64 times. They were again found out around the ground with immense pressure and a desire to win the hard ball, which has Ben Reid ready to swing the axe.
North will carry huge confidence into their clash at John Foord this weekend, but any complacency vs the Roos could prove costly come season’s end.
Corowa-Rutherglen were definitely more competitive in a game punters were tipping to end in another triple figure loss.
Steve Owen would be chuffed at matching the Rovers in the second half, narrowly going down in that period by a single goal. The Roos also held a solid tackle count, but that's owing more to the Rovers dominating a game of keepings off, doubling the possession count.
Sam Dunstan delivered with 5 majors for the Roos, but the class of Rovers Will Christie (26 hitouts, 29 touches), Lachie O'Brien (42 touches, 7 clearances) & Sam Cattapan (43 touches, 20 contested) was evident in also doubling the Roos score.
Sam Murray came off at half time with an ankle complaint, but reckons he should be right as the Rovers head to Birallee looking to go 3 & 0. Check out the game live:
The Raiders would have hoped to be more competitive with 4 former AFL listed players in the line-up, Tom Phillips being available from state commitments, but Albury looked irresistible with a 90 demolition, 11 individual goalkickers and 6 with multiple.
Jake Gaynor was massive with 19 contested from his 33 touches + a goal, as with Isaac Muller's 19 contested & 10 clearances, while Mat Walker & Kolby Heiner-Hennessy paired for 8 goals.
They'll look to continue that form when they host Lavi this week.
Yarra survived a late charge back by a spirited 5 goal final term from Lavi, but as the best sides do, found a way to get the job done. The Wheeler boys (58 touches combined, 34 contested & 15 inside 50's) were in the best again, while Panther Tim Oosterhoff leads the Doug Strang with another 4.
Not all good news out of the pigeon coup, as injury worries continue to mount with boom recruit Dan Howe missing the game with shingles, Leigh Williams proppy and ever reliable goal sneak Nick Fotgergill suffering a compound collarbone fracture. Apparently, Stevie J was begging guys to head out with niggles, suggesting a severe lack of confidence in their depth. Lavi's Xavier Russell also sent to hospital with a suspected broken hand.
Yarra are off Myrt where they'll be hoping to address their slow starts.
Wodonga are doing their darnedest to throw games away with inaccuracy, converting only a quarter of shots on in the first 2 rounds. Their 7.19 - 61 was still enough to escape with 15 point W at home to the Saints.
Jack O'Sullivan showed why he's a dual GV Morrison Medallist with 17 contested & 9 inside 50's from his 32, while Matt Munro was the best for the Saints with 6 tackles, 7 inside 50's and 2 snags of his own, including a long bomb from outside the arch to open scoring.
The Dogs face the Maggies this week in what shapes as an interesting one if they can address their wayward kicking, and if Wang can’t find a way to arrest teams bullying them. Find out live:
The long wait for the Hume League is over. Round 1 is here, and she looks a ripper!
CDHBU have had a massive off-season on the recruitment front, addressing outside speed & class where they were proven lacking last year. They’ll look to capitalise on a BB side expected to slide after a tumultuous break, as stalwart Darcy I’Anson takes the reigns. Don’t miss the action:
Culcairn might have been quiet through the off season, but whispers suggest they could throw some wildcards from the RAAF at some unsuspecting opponents this year, while RWW prepare for a full scale assault on the flag and should take care of the Lions with little trouble.
Henty have some solid juniors coming through the ranks from their premiership winning thirds that'll be looking to cement their spots, and with the guidance of former league player Jared Brennan returning for 10 hit-outs, the swampies will be hoping to fast track success. Brennan will miss this week against a Murray outfit bolstered by plenty from the NT, coaxed south by new coach Dylan Dos Santos. Look out for some high flying magic from Michael Mummery.
Lockhart may have only onboarded a few, with the big name of Jordy Harrington returning, but much like the Lions, expect a few unknowns from the barracks to show up to cause sides issues. They take on a Billabong outfit who have ventured to Canberra to stock up their list, as both fight to dislodge someone from last year's top 6.
Howlong head to Osborne for first crack at the reigning premiers and will be giving themselves a solid chance after the Tiges turnover. It was a cracker in the corresponding clash last year, with the Spiders going down by the single gaol, and looks like it could be similar on Saturday. But one should never count out the perennial champs as they embark on a new era under Myles Aalbers.
Match of the round sees a tale of two tapes between a resurgent Jindera and powerhouses Holbrook in what could well be an early preview of the decider.
The Kennel have bought in a host of talent as they look to return to the heights once known, while the Brookers have topped up a nearly unchanged list with equally impressive imports.
Much like KSC v Yak in the TDFL, both sound like they’re going in less than full-strength, but it still shapes as one not to miss. Watch below:
Footy returns to the TDFL in a full capacity, with some massive results!
Game over at half time with DMB down by 10 goals, but that wasn't enough for Tallangatta, piling on another 20 in the second half to blow away the bombers by 180 points, who only managed the solitary between the big sticks.
James Breen returned to the Bughouse with 7 snags, while another 6 players snuck forward with multiple to give the goal umpire a crook neck.
They'll look to repeat the effort this week against the Saints.
Thurgoona open with 6.5 unanswered to steal the game by quarter time over Wodonga Saints, running out just shy of 20 goal winners.
Jake Bruce (4 goals), captain Tom Rake (3), Ollie (3) & Bailey McAlister (2) enjoyed service on a silver platter from Tyson Neander & Charlie Williams.
The Cats & Dogs face off at Barkly Park this week in a battle between the 2 clubs tipped to be most improved.
Mitta trailed Barny all day, but rallied late with 6 of the last 7 goals, including a 4 goal to 1 final term to overcome the Tiges by 13 points.
Poaching Raiders has paid dividends for the Mountain Men, even without Shane Munro available for the clash. Young forward Lincoln Reed snagged 3 majors & Tom Gibbs was influential in the comeback, claiming a controversial 6 pointer that was adjudged not to have been touched on the line.
Barny will be looking to rebound against DMB, while the Mitta host Wahgunyah fresh off the bye.
Chiltern enjoyed a nice warm up before hosting fellow flag favourites KSC, sorting out Beechy with little trouble. Jet Kyle Cooper (2 goals) & VC Mitch Hemming led the way for the Swans, who didn't need to switch out of 2nd gear to secure the W in the opener of their title defence.
The Swans hold the wood over the Hawks, winning 5 of the last 6, and unveiling last year's flag over their rivals on that fateful September day should add plenty of spice to a match that already shapes as a beaut.
KSC toppled an undermanned Yak, who went in without former B&F Josh Garland & focal point Nick Donaghey also missing. The Roos were further starved of a target up forward when Zac Leitch went down early.
Yak weren't the only ones with big outs, as Hawks Mitch Paton, Caleb Beattie & Jordyn Croucher missed through injury.
It may not have proven the matchup we hoped for, but the season is still young and a rematch come September has plenty of promise.
The Roos welcome Beechy this week, and will look to do some damage.
Bright are handing out lessons, while Tarra stun King Valley...again?
One may have expected the Roos to take care of this one given news out of the kennel has been pretty light on after a lean season. However, maybe it's not that surprising given last year's results between these 2.
The Valley pumped Tarra early in season '23, but dropped their return fixture by 3 points in a high scoring affair.
Good result for a team that may not see much success again this year, particularly when they host a red hot Greta this week.
The Blues midfield is looking mighty dangerous early on, handing Goorambat a 71-point hiding. Headed by ever reliable James McClounan & Lachie Kennett, plus import Des Kelly winning the contest in the guts, Frazer Judd & Cody Crawford had a day out on their service, both bagging 5 majors.
Crawford (12) hot on the heals of Bright's Cooper Thompson (13) on the goalkicking tallyboard.
Goorambat face off against King Valley, both teams looking to bounce back.
Bright gave Milawa a reality check with a comprehensive thumping.
After a relatively tight opening term, the Dees could only manage 3 points in the next 2 quarters, with Mountain Men Mick Elliot & Sam Dalbosco leading a miserly defence that allowed just the 3 goals for the day.
Bright had the game stitched up by 3 quarter time, but added another 6 straight to hammer the win home.
Things will almost certainly end up nastier when Bright head to Benalla to take on the All Blacks.
Whorouly will rue not having taken the most of their chances, despite running away with a 10 goal win over the All Blacks. 20 behinds is about the only blemish on a day where the Lions had everything their own way.
Paul Glanville held the fort down back, even bobbing up for a sausage roll, while Josh Newton snagged 3.
If they can sort out their inaccuracy, they'll fancy themselves a chance in their encounter with North Wang.
Moyhu snared the 4 points against North Wang in a tight one under lights. The young Hoppers had to fight their way back into things in the second term, having been jumped early by the Hawks. David McDonald and Dylan Carmody were influential in Moyhu entering the final break with a 13 point lead, and holding on for a solid 6-point win.
They'll take plenty of confidence away, but will be up against it this week when they take on the might of Bonnie Doon after a week off.
